Response to Keyu

Honestly, the only Chinese humor that I am familiar with are the Rush Hour movies and the karate kid movies. Those movies are a mixture between action and comedy though. But, I still find them very funny. One thing that I notice in Rush Hour is that the main guy, Jackie Chan, is a more mature kind of funny where as his partner, who is American, is more of an immature kind of funny. Its the same way in Karate Kid. So based on that, I would assume that Hollywood believes that Chinese people are more mature than Americans.

Stephen Chow reminds me of Jim Carey because both are very talented actors where they are almost different in every movie that they have been in. I love Will Ferrell and think he is one of the funniest people alive, but in every movie that he is in, he is basically the same character. Many comedians are like that as well including Seth Rogen, but I admire Jim Carey for being a true actor and comedian and I thank Keyu for introducing me to another like him, Stephen Chow!

  1. Similarly to Chad, I am not very familiar with Chinese humor, but I am also a fan of Jackie Chan’s work in The Karate Kid. This is a comical work but it also involves a great deal of action and a fast-paced plot, which is most likely the reason why I enjoyed the film. Although I am inexperienced in this genre of theatre, I feel as if I would really enjoy Chinese works. The plot moves along fairly quickly, and there are not many dull moments. Action scenes come out of nowhere and curveballs are frequently thrown at the viewers. I often get distracted or grow bored very easily when watching movies or videos, so the fact that there is much action in Chinese movies helps keep my attention.

Furthermore, I think that the fact that Stephen Chow is able to take on several different roles of acting allows him to be superior to other Chinese comedians. He is not only funny in one specific area, but he appeals to viewers because he is comical in many different ways. While I do not agree that he is funnier than Will Ferrell, I would say that some aspects, he is a more advanced type of actor. Will Ferrell is hilarious, but just as Chad said, he is basically the same character in every movie that he is in; he is always someone who does not exactly belong and finds every opportunity he can to act like a complete fool. Yes, I love him, but when we really step back and analyze his types of acting that are portrayed in his films, we see that there is a lack of diversity to his works. However, some may say that I am too critical, especially since he is considered to be one of the most famous actors in the world.
