Response to Alex Post

I think that vines are very funny. Vines are able to not waste peoples time because the videos are less than 30 seconds long. It is weird today when a friend tells you to watch a funny video and the video is like 5 minutes long. Times have definitely changed.

I think that racist jokes can be very funny, depending on the person that says them. When Tosh.O says them, many people can get very offended. But when Key and Peele make them, they are hilarious. It is probably because it is not appropriate for Daniel Tosh to make them because they are never about white people, but if you make fun of yourself, like Key and Peele, then it is hysterical.

I really enjoyed watching that video as well. Unfortunately, my parents would chase me around with a belt when I was younger and scream at me, but hey they only did that cause they loved me right.
I use to think that I had it bad until I watched my friend Demarcus get beat in his car by his mom. I will never forget that day.

  1. Vines are definitely my favorite types of comical videos because they only last for a short amount of time, so they are able to keep my attention. Also, they replay over and over, so if I do not understand it the first time, I always have plenty of chances to watch it again. I barely waste anytime doing this because they are so short in length. Furthermore, there are no boring or slow moments because they only last a few seconds.

Alex’s chosen vine was very humorous because it dealt with racism. Although this is still a very sensitive topic in the world today, jokes and funny videos are frequently made portraying the concepts of racism. This short clip in particular deals with a white mother and a black mother and their different responses to their child being secretive in the bathroom with the door closed. While many people may find these videos as inappropriate because of the way it portrays the reactions of each of these women, I do not take offense to this kind of humor whatsoever.

I am from Memphis, Tennessee, and racism is still a large issue in my community today. The city of Memphis is predominantly black, so it would not be very smart to go downtown and start making racist jokes on the streets to strangers. On the other hand, I played competitive basketball throughout my whole life, which is certainly a dominantly black sport. Therefore, I had the opportunity to form friendships with these girls, whose main difference from me was simply the color of their skin. It was great how we were able to make racist jokes to each other, and no one would get offended.

While I do understand why people would get upset over racist jokes, at the end of the day, I do not think we should take offense to them because most of the time, these jokes are just for fun. Although these videos may portray real life scenarios, they are only meant to create humor, not personally offend anyone of a specific race.

  2. Race humor is very complicated, and there's a complex line between mocking racism, engaging in racism through joking, and casual joking that involves race in a friendly way.
